When I started high school in 1984, I came across three authors who would set me up for reading fantasy for the rest of my life (Davd Gemmell came a little later). They were David Eddings, Stephen Donaldson and Joel Rosenberg
Well, the news came through today that Rosenberg had died, at the distressingly early age of 57.
Rosenberg found his fame as the author of the Guardians of the Flame series, which saw a group of roleplayers cross over into a fantasy world and take up arms against slavers. It impressed the hell out of me in terms of the characterisation, the world creation, and the issues of freedom and liberty inserted into an otherwise standard fantasy setting. It was a series I followed right through high school and into university.
While Rosenberg’s output of novels slowed in recent times as he took up gun instruction and campaigning for second amendment rights, his books will always stay with me.
Vale Joel Rosenberg.
